Retired and Infirm Priests Collection letter of support

Holy Week, 2025

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We have been blessed since the pioneer days of our diocese with many priests who have served the people of Northwest Iowa. They have presided over countless number of Masses, baptized thousands of the faithful, heard numerous confessions, officiated at weddings, and been there at the death and funerals of our loved ones.

In the Diocese of Sioux City, we have forty-two retired priests. Many of these priests have continued to assist in parishes when needed when our forty-three assigned priests need assistance when they are on vacation, retreat, or are ill.

None of us are growing any younger. Our retired priests continue to need our prayers, support, and assistance.

Our annual collection for Retired and Infirm Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City is an officially designated special collection which is expected to be taken up at all parishes, as it is designated a mandatory collection. All parishes are required physically to take a second collection at all Masses of the Easter Vigil and Ester Sunday.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the encouragement and support of last year’s collection and again I ask for your prayers and encouragement for the crucial annual collection to help provide for the long-term funding needed by the Diocesan Priest Welfare Fund, to enhance the monthly benefits to our retired priests in perpetuity and to assist in the special health care needs of the infirm and retired priests of our diocese.

This collection is one way we can say thank you to priests who have faithfully served our faithful in our parishes, schools, and institutions.

Semana Santa, 2025 

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, 

Desde los días pioneros de nuestra diócesis hemos sido bendecidos con muchos sacerdotes que han servido a la gente del noroeste de Iowa. Han presidido innumerables Misas, bautizado a miles de fieles, escuchado numerosas confesiones, oficiado bodas y estado presentes en la muerte y los funerales de nuestros seres queridos.

En la Diócesis de Sioux City, tenemos cuarenta y seis sacerdotes jubilados. Muchos de estos sacerdotes continúan ayudando en las parroquias cuando es necesario cuando nuestros treinta y nueve sacerdotes asignados necesitan ayuda cuando están de vacaciones, de retiro o están enfermos.

Ninguno de nosotros se está volviendo más joven. Nuestros sacerdotes jubilados siguen necesitando nuestras oraciones, soporte y asistencia. 

Nuestra colecta anual para los Sacerdotes Jubilados y Enfermos de la Diócesis de Sioux City es una colecta especial designada oficialmente que se espera que se lleve a cabo en todas las parroquias, ya que está designada como una colecta obligatoria. Se requiere que todas las parroquias tomen físicamente una segunda colecta en todas las Misas de la Vigilia Pascual y el Domingo de Resurrección.  

Desde lo más profundo de mi corazón les agradezco por el aliento y el apoyo de la colecta del año pasado y nuevamente les pido sus oraciones y apoyo crucial para la colecta anual para ayudar a proporcionar los fondos a largo plazo que necesita el Fondo Diocesano de Bienestar para Sacerdotes, para mejorar los beneficios mensuales de nuestros sacerdotes jubilados permanentemente y para ayudar en las necesidades especiales de atención médica de los sacerdotes enfermos y jubilados de nuestra diócesis. 

Esta colecta es una forma de agradecer a los sacerdotes que han servido fielmente a nuestros fieles en nuestras parroquias, escuelas e instituciones.

Que Cristo continúe bendiciéndoles abundantemente.
