Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I write to assure the people of our Diocese in Northwest Iowa of my concern for all of you, but especially at this time, our immigrant brothers and sisters.

Recently, we have heard many distressing reports: blanket statements about immigrants being criminals, calls for mass deportations and warnings to our schools and churches about possible raids by immigration enforcement officials.

I ask all of us to be careful to believe what we hear. It is true that some immigrants have committed serious crimes, and they must be held accountable to justice, but we must also recognize that they are human beings created by God. The great majority of our immigrant neighbors are law abiding and hard working. Many are vitally important to our economy and provide a strong workforce to bring growth, youth and vibrancy to our shrinking communities and parishes across the region.

My brothers and sisters from across the world who call the Diocese of Sioux City home and who have enriched our communities, I want you to know that I join my brother bishops, my brother priests and deacons and the faithful of the Diocese of Sioux City in standing with you, praying for you and supporting you during these challenging times.

The Catholic Church, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the Iowa Catholic Conference all stand ready to work with our national leaders on responsible immigration reform, including smart border security, pathways to lawfully being present in our country and towards citizenship, and improvements in the administrative and court components of the immigration system. Our duty as a Church and as a nation is well defined in our scripture and in the examples and teachings of Jesus Christ. We must value each and every person created by our loving God and give them the dignity they deserve as sons and daughters of God our Father. All of this must be done in justice and mercy.

To all of our parishioners and to all of our neighbors across Northwest Iowa, whether Catholic or not, please know of my prayers, my support and the reality that the Sioux City Diocese not only stands with you in these difficult and painful times, but we’ll also walk with you in the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord. May Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, watch over us and protect us through her intercession.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

Escribo para asegurar a la gente de nuestra Diócesis en el noroeste de Iowa mi preocupación por todos ustedes, pero especialmente en este momento, a nuestros hermanos y hermanas inmigrantes.

Recientemente, hemos escuchado muchos informes angustiosos: declaraciones generales sobre los inmigrantes siendo criminales, llamados a deportaciones masivas y advertencias a nuestras escuelas e iglesias sobre posibles redadas por parte de los funcionarios de inmigración.

Les pido a todos que tengamos cuidado de creer lo que escuchamos. Es cierto que algunos inmigrantes han cometido delitos graves, y deben rendir cuentas ante la justicia, pero también debemos reconocer que son seres humanos creados por Dios. La gran mayoría de nuestros vecinos inmigrantes son respetuosos de la ley y trabajadores. Muchos son de vital importancia para nuestra economía y proporcionan una fuerza laboral sólida para traer crecimiento, juventud y vitalidad a nuestras comunidades y parroquias que cada vez son más reducidas en toda la región.

Mis hermanos y hermanas de todo el mundo que llaman hogar a la Diócesis de Sioux City y que han enriquecido nuestras comunidades, quiero que sepan que me uno a mis hermanos obispos, a mis hermanos sacerdotes y diáconos y a los fieles de la Diócesis de Sioux City para estar con ustedes, orar por ustedes y apoyarlos durante estos tiempos difíciles.
La Iglesia Católica, la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos y la Conferencia Católica de Iowa están listos para trabajar con nuestros líderes nacionales en una reforma migratoria responsable, incluyendo una seguridad fronteriza inteligente, caminos para estar legalmente presente en nuestro país y hacia la ciudadanía, y mejorar los componentes administrativos y judiciales del sistema de inmigración.
