The St Joseph Council at Milford offered their annual youth spelling contest recently for any area fourth through seventh grade student.
There were seven youth that registered for the contest, although there were not participants entered in each grade level this year.
Winners included: Fourth grade – first place was Emma Cunningham, second place was Kai Galbavy and third place was Ellie Edwards and the alternate was Jacob Kalkhoff. Second alternate was Keaston Cook.
Fifth grade – first place was Sadie Vellema.
Every participant received a Certificate recognizing their achievement. The top three place achievers advance to the regional contest in Milford on Feb. 9. The fourth place achiever serves as alternate for the advanced competition. Qualifiers from regional event then compete at the state contest in Ames on March 9.
The Knights of Columbus will plan to sponsor the Spelling Bee again next year. “I would hope that we surpass the number of participants next year.” said Don Breuker on behalf of the St Joseph Council.
The Milford council also conducts Coats for Kids in the fall, Tootsie Roll sales with donations going to Special Olympics, PID (People with Intellectual Disabilities), Christmas food boxes for local people with hardships. The St Joseph Council 7284 has been providing 4 Scholarships of $750 each for graduating seniors.
