The Onawa-Blencoe Knights of Columbus Council 6249 co-sponsored the 14th annual Round Ball Classic to send 15 middle and high school students to the Dec. 21 Creighton Blue Jays basketball game vs. Villanova Wildcats. Co-sponsored included West Monona Community School District, Sunshine Foods and Creighton University.
Fifteen students and three adults the Jays beating the Wildcats 86-79 with great shooting in a very physical game, organizers said.
The Knights handled arrangements and provided transportation; Creighton comped the game tickets; Sunshine Foods in Onawa (courtesy of manager Brett Niles) donated the food (chicken, bananas, cookies, chips, water); and the West Monona High School administration promoted the outing. There was no cost to the students, their parents, teachers, coaches and volunteer chaperones.
All area high school and middle school students from West Monona, West Harrison, Maple Valley (Mapleton, Anthon-Oto, Charter Oak-Ute), Whiting CSD and Westwood CSD were invited to participate. The Onawa-Blencoe Knights of Columbus council 6249 represents parishes and communities in the surrounding area and school districts.
The Knights plan to offer a similar outing during Christmas break 2025. Interested students and administrators should watch for the announcement of the 15th Annual Roundball Classic next fall.
