I have enjoyed over the past two weeks reading cards and well-wishes sent to me from many members of the Diocese of Sioux City but especially cards sent to me from children in our diocesan schools. Many of these were drawings, picturing me in various poses.
And while some, especially to those of the younger children, were phrases of congratulations which were obviously copied, others contained personal notes. One student wanted to know if I liked hockey and knew about the Youngstown Phantoms, to which the answer to both is “yes.” Several wished me to have a “good time” in Sioux City. Another assured me that I would have a “great career.”
I was amused to find several young students concerned about my stress level, assuring me that a little bit of nervousness is fine but not to let myself become overwhelmed. One fifth grader in particular wrote, “It’s ok to be a little scared or nervous. But just remember do your best and let God do the rest.”
Out of the mouths of babes! All of them reminded me of our connectedness to one another, the fact that we are brothers and sisters to one another through our one baptism, our one faith that binds us to one another, our one faith in Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
May we all remember the love of Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, that is ours. May we all remember the greatness to which he calls us as his followers and, as our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV reminds us, as his friends.
