Bishop: Respect Life, rosary month, mental health

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ –
 
I was blessed to spend the past few days in Sioux Falls with diocesan priests at our priest convocation. Thank you for your prayers and your patience as we were away from the diocese and our parishes for a few days of continuing education and fraternity. In addition to our active priests attending, we were pleased to have so many of our retired brothers join us for the convocation. 

Christopher Carstens, director of the Diocese of La Crosse Office of Divine Worship, was our convocation speaker, presenting on liturgy to help us offer reverent and beautiful liturgies in our diocesan parishes. So, watch for them, especially for our priests singing more parts of the Mass.  Be sure to thank them for their efforts to make Mass beautiful.

October offers many opportunities for us to grow in our faith as well as attending Sunday Masses. 

“I came so that they might have life,” is the 2024 theme for Respect Life Month in the United States. This is a time for us to help build awareness in our parishes and our communities of the value of all human life from conception to natural death.

The Bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities is promoting a Respect Life Month Novena from Oct. 22 to 30. (Click here for English and Spanish novena prayers). Your prayers for the protection of human life at all stages are encouraged and greatly needed in today’s society, which often promotes a culture of death.

In the Diocese of Sioux City, I am grateful to all who are participating in the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil in Sioux City outside of Planned Parenthood, as well as any who are praying in their own homes and communities for an end to abortion, whether it be chemical or surgical. Both destroy the precious life of an innocent child as well as harm life of the mother. For those living in the Sioux City vicinity, you can still participate in the public prayer vigil through Nov. 3.

Other communities within the diocese have prayer events for the protection of life. Check with your local parish for possible events. 

On Tuesday, we honor the lives of children who have died before baptism – from miscarriage, abortion or other forms infant death – at our annual Memorial Mass at the Cathedral of the Epiphany. This is intentionally scheduled during both Respect Life Month and Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Whether the loss was fairly recent or decades ago, parents and family members of the lost child are encouraged to come and pray with us on Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. 

We adjusted the time of this Mass so that those attending the liturgy can also attend the Mary’s Choice annual Giving Hope Banquet later that night. Mary’s Choice is one of the pro-life organizations within Northwest Iowa that provides support for mothers and families. We are most grateful for their work.

October is also the month of the rosary, a much-loved Catholic devotion. If you were not able to pray a rosary on Oct. 7, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, please make an effort to pray the rosary often, and at least once during this month of the Holy Rosary.

The U.S. bishops are concerned with the well-being of the faithful, whether it is spiritual, physical or mental health. With that in mind, the bishops initiated a National Mental Health campaign in October to raise awareness “and help remove the stigma or embarrassment for persons who suffer, and to advocate a clear message to all: everyone who needs help should get help.” The National Novena for Mental Health started Oct. 10, but you can consider joining at any time on behalf of anyone suffering from mental health conditions.

See my letter in English and Spanish regarding World Mission Sunday Oct. 20, where we are reminded of the vital role each of us plays in spreading the Gospel and supporting the global church. The theme is “go and invite everyone to the banquet.” Thank you for your generosity.

I was honored last week to participate in the ordination Mass of Bishop Dennis Walsh, the new bishop of the Diocese of Davenport. It was a wonderful liturgy. I know we will have the same when my successor is appointed. Thank you for your continued prayers for me and for our new bishop, whoever he may be.

I encourage you to take time to enjoy the gifts of God’s creation in these mild fall days.
Please keep in prayer all those suffering from the effects of violent storms in the southeastern part of our country.  May we support one another both in prayer and in deeds.

Thanks for supporting the Denver Broncos!  They could go all the way…but it is still early, so we will take one win at a time.

Respeto a la vida, mes del rosario 
 
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
 
Tuve la bendición de pasar los últimos días en Sioux Falls con sacerdotes diocesanos en nuestra convocación de sacerdotes. Gracias por sus oraciones y su paciencia mientras estuvimos lejos de la diócesis y de nuestras parroquias por unos días de fraternidad y educación continua. Además de la asistencia de nuestros sacerdotes activos, nos complació que muchos de nuestros hermanos jubilados se unieran a nosotros para la convocatoria. Christopher Carstens, director de la Oficina de Culto Divino de la Diócesis de La Crosse, fue nuestro presentador en la convocación, presentando sobre la liturgia y como podemos ofrecer liturgias reverentes y hermosas en nuestras parroquias diocesanas. Por lo tanto, estén atentos, especialmente a nuestros sacerdotes que cantaran más partes de la Misa. Asegúrese de agradecerles por sus esfuerzos para hacer que la Misa sea hermosa.

Sus oraciones por la protección de la vida humana en todas sus etapas son alentadas y muy necesarias en la sociedad actual, que a menudo promueve la cultura de la muerte.

Ajustamos el horario de esta Misa para que los asistentes a la liturgia también puedan asistir al banquete anual, Dando Esperanza, de Mary's Choice más tarde esa noche. Octubre es también el mes del rosario, una devoción católica muy querida. Si no pudo rezar un rosario el 7 de octubre, la fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, haga un esfuerzo por rezar el rosario con frecuencia, y al menos una vez durante este mes del Santo Rosario.

Los obispos de los Estados Unidos se preocupan por el bienestar de los fieles, ya sea espiritual, físico o mental. Con esto en mente, en octubre los obispos iniciaron una campaña nacional de salud mental para crear conciencia "y ayudar a eliminar el estigma o la vergüenza de las personas que sufren, y para abogar por un mensaje claro a todos: todos los que necesitan ayuda deben obtenerla". La Novena Nacional para la Salud Mental comenzó 10 Oct., pero puede considerar unirse en cualquier momento en nombre de cualquier persona que sufra de condiciones de salud mental.

La semana pasada tuve el honor de participar en la Misa de ordenación del Obispo Dennis Walsh, el nuevo obispo de la Diócesis de Davenport. Fue una liturgia maravillosa. Sé que tendremos lo mismo cuando se escoja a mi sucesor. Gracias por sus continuas oraciones por mí y por nuestro nuevo obispo, quienquiera que sea.

Les animo a que se tomen un tiempo para disfrutar de los dones de la creación de Dios en estos días templados de otoño. Por favor, mantengan en oración a todos aquellos que sufren los efectos de las violentas tormentas en la parte sureste de nuestro país. Que nos apoyemos unos a otros tanto en la oración como en las obras.
