Bishop: National Migration Week

Bishop statement for National Migration Week Sept. 23 to 29 & World Day of Migrants and Refugees Sept. 29
 
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
 
The church asks us to set aside time for a deeper understanding of the migrant experience during National Migration Week from Sept. 23 to 29, culminating with the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Sept. 29 marks our 110^th commemoration of World Day of Migrants and Refugees.
 
In the Holy Father’s message for the commemoration, he compares the immigrant’s often difficult journey with the Jews in the desert in the Book of Exodus:
 
“Like the people of Israel in the time of Moses, migrants often flee from oppression, abuse, insecurity, discrimination and lack of opportunities for development. Similar to the Jews in the desert, migrants encounter many obstacles in their path: they are tried by thirst and hunger; they are exhausted by toil and disease. They are tempted by despair.”
 For several decades, we have celebrated the gifts that our immigrant sisters and brothers bring to churches, communities and schools throughout our diocese. We are thankful for the sharing of their cultures and experiences.
 
The church has responded over the years in various ways to serve the needs of migrants and refugees in our communities.
 
Numerous parishes in the Diocese of Sioux City have celebrated Masses in Spanish and Vietnamese for decades. Our Catholic schools and parishes regularly highlight and celebrate the many cultures present in their communities.
 
We are blessed with our recent partnership with Catholic Charities to create the Welcome program, offering critical immigration legal services, mental health services and case management to immigrants of all faith backgrounds in our area.
 
On a national level, we were honored to support the work of the National Immigration Forum, an organization that advocates for the value of immigrants and immigration in the United States with a goal of advancing sound federal immigration solutions.
 
As we dedicate this day to migrants and refugees, let us pray together for all those who have left their homelands for a safe place to live, work and raise their families.
 
 Prayer from Pope Francis:
 
God, Almighty Father,
 we are your pilgrim Church
 journeying towards the Kingdom of heaven.
 We live in our homeland,
 but as if we were foreigners.
 Every foreign place is our home,
 yet every native land is foreign to us.
 Though we live on earth,
 our true citizenship is in heaven.
 Do not let us become possessive
 of the portion of the world
 you have given us as a temporary home.
 Help us to keep walking,
 together with our migrant brothers and sisters,
 toward the eternal dwelling you have prepared for us.
 Open our eyes and our hearts
 so that every encounter with those in need
 becomes an encounter with Jesus, your Son and our Lord.

Declaración del Obispo Nickless para la Semana Nacional de la Migración – 23 al 29 de septiembre

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

La Iglesia nos pide que dediquemos tiempo a una comprensión más profunda de la experiencia de los migrantes durante la Semana Nacional de la Migración, que se celebra del 23 al 29 de septiembre, que culmina con la Jornada Mundial de los Migrantes y los Refugiados. El 29 de septiembre se conmemoran 110 años de la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado.

En el mensaje del Santo Padre para la conmemoración, compara el viaje del inmigrante, el cual a menudo es difícil, con el de los judíos en el desierto en el Libro del Éxodo: 
"Al igual que el pueblo de Israel en la época de Moisés, los migrantes a menudo huyen de la opresión, el abuso, la inseguridad, la discriminación y la falta de oportunidades para el desarrollo. Al igual que los judíos en el desierto, los migrantes encuentran muchos obstáculos en su camino: son probados por la sed y el hambre; están agotados por el trabajo y la enfermedad. Durante varias décadas, hemos celebrado los dones que nuestras hermanas y hermanos inmigrantes traen a las iglesias, comunidades y escuelas de toda nuestra diócesis. Estamos agradecidos por compartir sus culturas y experiencias. 

A lo largo de los años, la Iglesia ha respondido de diversas maneras para atender las necesidades de los migrantes y refugiados en nuestras comunidades. 

Numerosas parroquias de la Diócesis de Sioux City han celebrado misas en español y vietnamita durante décadas. Nuestras escuelas y parroquias católicas destacan y celebran regularmente las muchas culturas presentes en sus comunidades. 

Somos bendecidos con nuestra reciente asociación con Caridades Católicas para crear el programa Welcome, que ofrece servicios legales críticos de inmigración, servicios de salud mental y administración de casos a inmigrantes de todos los orígenes religiosos en nuestra área. 
A nivel nacional, tuvimos el honor de apoyar el trabajo del Foro Nacional de Inmigración, una organización que aboga por el valor de los inmigrantes y la inmigración en los Estados Unidos con el objetivo de promover soluciones federales de inmigración sólidas.

Al dedicar este día a los migrantes y refugiados, oremos juntos por todos aquellos que han dejado sus países de origen en busca de un lugar seguro para vivir, trabajar y criar a sus familias.

Tuyên bố của Đức Giám mục về Di dân vào
Chúa Nhật ngày 29 tháng Chín.
 
Anh chị em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô,
 
 Giáo hội yêu cầu chúng ta dành thời gian để hiểu sâu hơn về kinh nghiệm di cư trong Tuần lễ Di cư Quốc gia từ 23 đến 29 tháng Chín, đỉnh điểm là Ngày Di dân và Tị nạn Thế giới. Ngày 29 tháng Chín đánh dấu kỷ niệm 110 năm Ngày Di dân và Tị nạn Thế giới.
 
Trong sứ điệp kỷ niệm của Đức Thánh Cha, ngài so sánh cuộc hành trình thường khó khăn của người nhập cư với người Do Thái trong sa mạc trong Sách Xuất hành:
 
Giống như người dân Israel trong thời Moses, những người di cư thường chạy trốn khỏi sự áp bức, lạm dụng, bất an, phân biệt đối xử và thiếu cơ hội phát triển. Tương tự như người Do Thái trong sa mạc, những người di cư gặp nhiều trở ngại trên con đường của họ: họ bị thử thách bởi khát và đói; Họ kiệt sức vì vất vả và bệnh tật.
