Bishop Heelan claimed the championship in the annual CYO volleyball tournament held in Algona last Saturday. Kuemper Catholic finished second, followed by Gehlen Catholic, St. Edmond, Remsen St, Mary and Bishop Garrigan.
The all-tournament team consisted of Heelan’s Ireland Jackson, Maddie LaFleur, and Maliyah Hacker, Kuemper’s Kaylie Simons and Brianna Wittrock, Aurora Goebel of Gehlen, Mariah Meyers of St. Edmond, Tessa Tentinger of Remsen and Emmi Bartolo of Bishop Garrigan.
Spring/summer coaches of year
CYO coaches of the year for the spring and summer seasons were also announced at the tournament.
Recipients included Deb Gute of Kuemper for girls golf, Brian Billmeier of Kuemper for boys golf, Scott Willman of RSM for girls track, Matt LaFleur and Shaun Ryan of Heelan for boys track, Bill Shirbroun of St. Edmond for softball, and Andy Osborne of Heelan for baseball. Football coach Marty Wadle of Garrigan was awarded the Msgr. Joseph Tolan Award as the overall CYO coach of the year after leading his team to the 8-man football championship.
