Denison St. Rose of Lima Parish unveiled a life-sized marble casting of Michelangelo’s Pieta Sept. 20, following a prayer service. Father Michael Cronin, pastor, blessed the new artwork, located in the narthex of the church.
The Carrara marble Pieta is one of 100 produced by the Arte Divine company, a member of Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. The famous statue depicts the body of the crucified Jesus on Mary’s lap.
Father Michael Cronin, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, incenses the new life-size Pieta.“Five hundred years ago, Michelangelo unveiled what would come to be regarded as one of the world’s great masterpieces of inspired art and perhaps the most beautiful sculpture ever created,” Arte Divine said of the artwork.Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the statue is part of the $2 million Witness His Glory capital campaign to enhance the worship space. Other enhancements will include new stained glass windows, a new high altar, statuary, lighting improvements, murals and new baptismal font. Some of the project artwork is new while others are repurposed.
