Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Sioux City are joining with schools throughout the nation to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 26 to Feb. 1. Listed here are just a few activities planned for schools within the Diocese of Sioux City. Most schools incorporate a mixture of prayer, service and recreational activities to mark the week. Bishop Walker Nickless will visit several schools as well.
Bishop Garrigan Schools, Algona (Bishop Garrigan and Seton Grade School, Algona) On Jan. 27 students will be able to wear hats and they will visit nursing homes. They will make cards for seminarians on Jan. 29 and participate in a living rosary. No uniforms will be required on Jan. 31 when students will participate in schoolwide fun activities.
Sacred Heart School, Boone It will be McTeachers Night at McDonalds from 5 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 27. An all-school Mass will be held at noon on Jan. 29.
Kuemper Catholic School, Carroll Kuemper will celebrate the community on Jan. 27 with each grade K-6 visiting a local business. That day is trivia contest for 7-8 graders and Winter Olympics for high schoolers. The school will celebrate vocations on Jan. 30 with a Q&A with priests and sisters for grades 4-6 and eucharistic adoration with prayers for vocations for grades 7-12.
Danbury Catholic School, Danbury Students will visit two area nursing homes on Jan. 27 to help celebrate the community. A patriotic rosary at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 will be a highlight of the day with special guests including veterans, military, law enforcement and families. Students will listen to guest speakers on Jan. 30 to hear how they share their God-given talents.
St. Rose of Lima School, Denison Students will celebrate the nation and community on Jan. 28 by mapping alumni around the world. For a service project on students will make Valentine baskets for area nursing homes on Jan. 29. Bishop Nickless will preside at a school Mass at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 30.
Emmetsburg Catholic, Emmetsburg Students will participate in Random Acts of Kindness on Jan. 27. An all-school rosary will be held on Jan. 28 and all are welcome to attend. A school will be held the morning of Jan. 31, followed by picnic lunch.
St. Edmond Catholic Schools, Fort Dodge The theme of Jan. 29 will be celebrating the nation and students will be able to wear neon or patriotic attire. Vocations is the focus of Jan. 30 and St. Edmond will celebrate its faculty, staff and volunteers on Jan. 31, including a Teacher Swap Day. Elements of service for the week will be a food drive for school pantry and making placemats for the upcoming parish dinner.
St. Mary School, Humboldt In celebration of CSW, cinnamon rolls hosted by the school board will be offered for a free will donation after Mass on Jan. 26 and there will be a school open house. There will be historical movies in classrooms to celebrate our nation on Jan. 29 and guest speakers. An all-school rosary for vocations will be highlight of vocations with classroom cards for seminarians and Briar Cliff pen-pals.
Gehlen Catholic School, Le Mars Teachers and staff will enjoy breakfast treats, lunch and casual dress on Jan. 28. The Annual Family Picnic is slated for noon on Jan. 30. There will be a student blessing, plus games and activities for all students on Jan. 31.
Pocahontas Catholic School, Pocahontas Bishop Nickless will celebrate Mass for students on Jan. 31. After Mass students will join their families for a brown bag lunch. Bishop Nickless and Patty Lansink, diocesan superintendent of schools, will visit classrooms after lunch.
St. Mary Schools, Remsen To celebrate students, the students will not be given homework on Jan. 28 and some will partake in a sock hop and bingo. The students will write thank you notes on Jan. 29 and will participate in a 2:30 p.m. living rosary on Jan. 30.
St. Patrick School, Sheldon Students will help serve at the Omelet Breakfast set for Jan. 26. Bishop Nickless will visit the school on Jan. 27 with the living rosary that day. Students will enjoy bingo and lunch with their families on Jan. 30.
Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, Sioux City (Bishop Heelan High School, Holy Cross School, Mater Dei School, Sacred Heart School and Cathedral Dual Language) Students will take part in service projects on Jan. 27 at local charities. Elementary students will write thank you notes to first responders, donors and community leaders. An all -school Mass for students PreK-12 will be held in the O’Gorman Fieldhouse at Bishop Heelan High School on Jan. 28. There will be a spirited day on Jan. 29 with campus ministry sessions in every building with prayer teams in the high school and adoration for elementary students.
Sacred Heart School, Spencer A school open house and tours of Sacred Heart is planned for 2 p.m. on Jan. 26. Picnic with parents and cookies to the community are activities on Jan. 29. Afternoon bingo is planned for Jan. 31.
St. Mary Schools, Storm Lake Students in preschool through eighth grade will participate in service activities by making posters and thank you cards for various community and parish leaders/organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, fire and police departments - that will be delivered with chocolates. There will be door decorating and judging during the week. On Jan. 28 there will be activities/snacks for middle and high school students with a movie for elementary students.
